SUBSTANCE ABUSE EVALUATIONS

CCW offers substance abuse evaluations (or assessments) for adults suffering from the disease of addiction. Quite often, we receive phone calls from potential clients who have recently found themselves in some kind of legal trouble. Regardless of the reason, be it DUI, drug possession, or a custody dispute, the caller is in need of a substance abuse evaluation from a qualified addiction counselor.

Certainly, substance abuse will be the main focal point of the evaluation.

However, at Connecticut Counseling & Wellness, we follow a slightly different approach, delving into other factors in addition to the usage of illicit substances. Our approach allows us to “get the whole picture.” From there, we can treat the whole person, not just the disease. Although being in the midst of legal issues often for the first time can be upsetting, we have found that these circumstances can provide the opportunity for self-discovery and improvement. We are sincerely interested in helping you, and are committed to your well-being.  Call our intake specialist today for a substance abuse evaluation in a compassionate setting for you or for your loved one.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE INTERVENTIONS

CCW offers substance abuse interventions. During the pre-intervention, our qualified, professional counselors will meet with the family members and/or friends of the individual to educate them about substance abuse and addiction and to learn the extent of the individual’s addiction problem from the family’s point of view. This group will form a team of people who will take part in a formal intervention. A date and time will be set for the intervention and the team will work together to present a consistent, rehearsed message. The client should not be told of this pre-intervention meeting.

The intervention is a carefully planned meeting with one of our professional counselors, the person struggling with addiction and that individual’s family members and/or friends. The client is asked to attend a meeting at the site of the intervention, and is informed of the reason. Members of the group each take turns sharing their concerns about how substance abuse is affecting their lives and the life of the client. Our addiction counselor then presents a treatment plan to the client and he or she is asked to accept that treatment plan right at that moment.

DOT SUBSTANCE ABUSE EVALUATIONS

CCW is one of the few counseling agencies in Connecticut that has a licensed therapist who possesses the United States Department of Transportation’s Substance Abuse Professional credential.  CCW therefore is able to provide DOT substance abuse evaluations. If you’re an employer or employee that is regulated by one of the six agencies governed by the US DOT, then there are strict return-to-duty guidelines that must be followed for any employee who tests positive for drugs or alcohol while working in a safety-sensitive position.

Specifically encompassed in Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 40, the Office of Drug & Alcohol Policy & Compliance (ODAPC) publishes, implements and provides authoritative interpretations of these regulations.  It is the responsibility of the Designated Employer Representative (DER) to facilitate the compliance of these regulations for your organization.

CCW provides accurate and timely implementation of the substance abuse evaluation, makes appropriate treatment recommendations, determines if there is compliance or non-compliance, and follow-up testing schedules. With over 15 years of experience working with employers and employees covered by DOT regulations, our mission is to insure that you and your employees are in full compliance with all DOT/SAP rules & regulations.

Andrea Becker-Abbott and Jerry Marcil are qualified SAPs, providing DOT and SAP-required evaluations.

ANGER MANAGEMENT & DOMESTIC VIOLENCE COUNSELING

Very often, due to both the direct effects of various abused substances on behavior, as well as the underlying stresses and conditions that are associated with substance abuse and addiction, individuals find themselves engaging in verbal and /or physical expressions of anger.  These behaviors can lead to legal consequences, troubled relationships, family issues, and the potential for self-harm.  It is important for all concerned to establish the causes of these behaviors, as well as determining if these are long-standing issues or an isolated occurrence.

Our process begins with an assessment including a comprehensive history of the circumstances leading to the need for assistance, followed by an individualized treatment plan based on the findings.  Group counseling, individual session work, or both may be required to address root causes and impart appropriate anger management strategies that work for the client.  As with all of our clinical approaches, the “whole person” concept is employed.
